Jacob dreamt of a ladder

Jacob's Dream (Found in: Genesis 28:10–17)

 

While Jacob was travelling from Beersheba to Haran he stopped all night in a certain place because the sun has set. He tried to sleep with a stone as his pillow.

Then he dreamed. He saw a ladder from earth to heaven and saw angels of God going up and down the ladder. 

Then Lord said, "I am the God of Abraham your father, and the God of Isaac. I will give you and your children the land where you are lying. Your children will be countless as the dust of the earth. All families of the earth shall be blessed in your children. I will be with you always."

Jacob awoke and said, "Surely the Lord is in this place and I did not know it. This is the house of  God and the Gate to Heaven." He rose, took the stone he used for pillow and set it up for a pillar. He poured oil upon the top of it. He called the place, Bethel.

He vowed, "If God be with me and will give me bread to eat and clothes to wear, then shall Lord be my God. This stone which I have set for a pillar shall be God's house."

Key Meaning & Symbolism:

1. The Ladder: Connects earth ↔ heaven — God bridging the gap between Himself and humanity.

2. Angels ascending/descending: God’s messengers moving between heaven and earth, bringing His presence, blessing, and help.

3. God standing at the top: Shows God is the source of the covenant, the promise, and the connection.

The Promise: God reaffirmed the Abrahamic covenant — land, descendants, blessing, and divine protection.

Later in the New Testament, Jesus refers to this very scene in John 1:51:

“You will see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”

Meaning: Jesus Himself is the true Ladder — the only way to connect earth to Heaven, and humanity to God.
