The final moments of Sodom and Gomorrha

Lot (Gen. 13)

When Lot was sitting at the gate of Sodom two angels approached him. Lot rose to greet them. He invited them to his house and gave a feast for them.

Later, the men of the city learned about the visitors and they went to Lot. "You just received two visitors. They are spies. Give them to us," they demanded.

"Do not do harm to my visitors," replied Lot. "I have two daughters. You may have them, but not my visitors." But the people wanted the two visitors. They were about to break the door of Lot's house, but the visitors pulled Lot inside, closed the door and made the people blind. So they went back to their homes.

The angels said to Lot, "Do you have any relatives? Bring them here, for we will erase Sodom from existence because the sins of the city displeased the Lord." Lot went out to call his future sons-in-law; but they ignored him.

When morning came, the angels told Lot, "Arise, take your wife and two daughters, or else they will vanish because of the sins of the city." When they hesitated, the angels took them by the hand and led them out of the city. Then they said, "Escape for your lives! Go to the mountains or else you will go down together with the city."

Lot said, "Please, my Lord, I cannot escape to the mountains. My I flee to this little city nearby?"

The angel said, "Yes, but hurry." The sun was up when Lot reached the little city with his two daughters.

Then the Lord rained upon Sodom and Gomorrha brimstone (old name for salt rock) and fire from out of heaven and made the cities of Sodom and Gomorrha disappeared from the face of the earth. No living thing was left except Lot and his children. Lot's wife looked back while running and she became a pillar of salt.
